BOARD GAMEFALL 2018 // GAME DESIGNTess Wiegmann: illustrations, game pieces & concept
Natacha bomparte: logo, insruction booklet & concept
[Brief] Design an interactive board/card game that breaks down a complex concept in four weeks. Made with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.
[Initial Ideas] We started the ideation process by creating a list of 20ish complex concepts, which were primarily science related. We found that the topic of DNA aligned with components of game design (DNA matching/competition; degenerating cells/the race against time). [Game Functions & Actions] The goal of the game is to stop DNA sequences from mutilating from the point of view of being inside the body. [view full game instructions] [Production] The physical elements of the game are all hand crafted. The box and board were constructed out of cardboard. The playing cards were printed on card stock and shaped with a corner rounder. The board pieces were cut with shop tools. [Branding] The majority of our time was spent on refining the functions of the game. The name of the game: The name "Quarantine" surfaced as a result of the goal of the game: to keep the other team from controlling the body. Typography: Cholla Sans was chosen as the primary typeface due to its squared yet rounded letters to relate to the connotations of science and the body. Logo: The logo features the Mighty White Blood Cell and the Vicious Virus. The board game box illustration materialized from the logo icons. Design Elements: The red-purple gradient featured on the action cards and body of the board game began as a rainbow. The white blood cells and black viruses were originally pink and green. [Challenges ] We continually adjusted the functions of the game and adjusted how the rules interacted with each other. Constantly changing elements meant we had to create more playing cards and take away less nodes on the game board. It was like taking one step forward and two steps back. The solution was to stop overcomplicating the game rules and our refine design decisions at the end instead of changing colors and layouts continuously. This project helped me appreciate all the skills that relate to game design.
Quarantine: The ultimate battle over the body's immune system between the Mighty White Blood Cells and the Vicious Viruses. In the 2 player vs 2 player game, participants learn
about science while engaging in a little competition. [view full game instructions] |
